What can Hooked Ontario Fish ID identify?

Fish ID is tuned for freshwater fish commonly found in Ontario waters. It works best on clear, well-lit photos of a single fish taken from the side, with fins and markings visible. It can recognize most sport fish, panfish, and common invasive species in our database, but it is not a complete field guide to every fish in North America.

What species can Fish ID not identify?

The model may struggle with very small juveniles, unusual colour morphs, hybrids, damaged or partially obscured fish, and species outside our Ontario-focused database. It also cannot reliably identify fish from silhouettes, underwater shots, or photos where hands, nets, or shadows cover key markings.

Is the identification result legally binding?

No. Fish ID is a helpful reference, not an authoritative identification. Always confirm your catch against the official Ontario fishing regulations and, when in doubt, release the fish. Regulations, seasons, and limits vary by Fisheries Management Zone and can change from year to year.

How should I take a photo for the best result?

Accepted Answer

Photograph the fish from the side in natural light before releasing it. Keep the whole fish in frame, avoid covering fins or markings with your hands, and use a sharp, in-focus image. Hold the fish over a neutral background like a boat deck, grass, or uncluttered water when possible.

Does Fish ID store or share my location?

Accepted Answer

No. All photo metadata, including GPS coordinates, is stripped before the image is sent for identification. We do not use your photo to discover fishing spots, and we will never share your exact catch location publicly. If you choose to share a catch to the Community Log, you can hide the precise location and display only a general area.

What does the confidence score mean?

Accepted Answer

The confidence percentage reflects how strongly the model matched your photo to a known species. High confidence means the key visual features line up well, while lower confidence means you should treat the result as a suggestion and compare the alternatives. Always use your own judgement and local knowledge.
