One of Ontario's most colourful native panfish, the pumpkinseed is a favourite of young anglers and anyone fishing light tackle from shore. They are abundant across southern and central Ontario, aggressive for their size, and one of the prettiest fish you'll pull through the ice.
Identification
Bright orange-yellow belly and breast, iridescent blue-green speckles across the sides and back, and a distinctive red-orange spot with a black centre on the gill flap (the 'ear flap'). Dorsal fin has a spiny front section and a soft rear section separated by a shallow notch.
Habitat & where to find them
Warm, shallow lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers with plenty of aquatic vegetation, docks, and submerged wood. Often found near shore in 2–10 ft of water, especially around docks, weed edges, and fallen trees.

Pro tactics
- Fish a small worm on a #10 hook under a bobber around docks and weed edges — pumpkinseed rarely refuse it.
- In summer, target shaded areas under docks and overhanging trees where sunfish congregate to escape bright sun.
- Through the ice, use a tiny tungsten jig tipped with a wax worm or spike 1–3 ft off bottom near weed lines.

What is the difference between a pumpkinseed and a bluegill?
Pumpkinseed have bright orange bellies, blue-green speckles, and a red-orange 'ear flap' with a black spot. Bluegill are more uniformly blue-green with a dark spot at the base of the dorsal fin and lack the pumpkinseed's vivid colour pattern.
How big do pumpkinseed get in Ontario?
Most pumpkinseed caught in Ontario are 4–7 inches. Fish over 8 inches are trophies; the Ontario record is just under a pound.
