    Brook Trout

Salvelinus fontinalis · also called: Speckled trout, Speckle, Brookie

Brook Trout — Ontario sportfish identification photo

Ontario's provincial fish. Brook trout demand cold, clean, well-oxygenated water and have shrunk in range as habitat has warmed — but they still thrive in Algonquin's headwater lakes, Nipigon country, and boreal streams.

    Average size
8–14 in in most lakes; 3–6 lbs in Nipigon-class water
    Ontario record
14.5 lbs — Ontario record (Lake Nipigon, 1915 — world record)
    Season
Fourth Saturday of April through Labour Day in many FMZs; some Algonquin/northern zones extended.
    Edibility
Excellent — small brookies are one of the best-eating freshwater fish in the world.

    Identification

Dark olive back with lighter worm-like vermiculations, red spots ringed in blue, white leading edges on lower fins, and a square (not forked) tail.

Habitat & where to find them

Cold headwater streams and deep spring-fed lakes 8–20°C. Boreal shield lakes north of Highway 17 hold the biggest fish.

    Best baits & lures

    Baits

    • Worms (streams)
    • Small live minnows

    Lures

    • Small spinner (Mepps #1–2)
    • Small spoon (Little Cleo 1/8 oz)
    • Fly patterns (Muddler Minnow, Woolly Bugger)

    Pro tactics

    • In May, cast a #1 gold Mepps in slack water below bubbling shallow riffles.
    • Backcountry paddle-in lakes hold much bigger brookies than roadside lakes — the effort is the barrier that protects them.
    • In September, target creek mouths — brookies stage before running up to spawn.
