    Lake Trout

Salvelinus namaycush · also called: Laker, Grey trout, Togue

Lake Trout — Ontario sportfish identification photo

The signature fish of Ontario's deep, cold Canadian Shield lakes. Lakers grow slowly, live 30+ years, and taste incredible. They're one of the best year-round targets, moving shallow in spring and fall and deep in summer.

    3–10 lbs
    Ontario record
63.13 lbs — Ontario record (Lake Nipigon)
    Season
Varies widely by FMZ. Many zones open the first Saturday of January and close September 30.
    Edibility
Excellent — pink/red flesh, best smoked or cedar-planked. Larger fish accumulate contaminants; follow Ontario's Guide to Eating Ontario Fish.
