    Northern Pike

Esox lucius · also called: Pike, Jack, Snake, Hammer handle (small ones)

Northern Pike — Ontario sportfish identification photo

The apex predator of Ontario's shallow weedy bays. Pike hit hard, run fast, and are almost always willing when other species have shut down. Every angler in Ontario catches pike whether they mean to or not.

    Average size
    20–30 in / 3–8 lbs
    Ontario record
    42.12 lbs — Ontario record
    Season
Year-round open season in most FMZs. Peak bites are May and September–November.
    Edibility
Excellent when handled right — Y-bones require a specific fillet technique. Pickerel-style fried pike is a shore-lunch favourite.
