Ontario Species Guide
Smallmouth Bass
Micropterus dolomieu · also called: Bronzeback, Smallie

Pound for pound the hardest-fighting fish in Ontario. Smallmouth explode on topwater, sky out of the water on the hookset, and pull like a fish twice their size. They inhabit almost every Canadian Shield lake south of the boreal forest.
Identification
Bronze to olive-green flanks with vertical dark bars, red eye, and jaw ending under (not past) the eye. Second dorsal fin flows smoothly into the first without a deep notch.
Habitat & where to find them
Rocky lakes and rivers with clear water and 65–75°F temperatures. Look on main-lake points, boulder shoals, and current seams in rivers.
