Ontario has roughly 250,000 lakes, and here's the short version: there is no simple list of "safe" lakes and "unsafe" lakes. Every waterbody in the province gets its own set of rules, and those rules depend on which species you caught, how big it was, and where you caught it. The good news is Ontario has done the legwork for you — you just need to know how to use it.
The province runs the Fish Contaminant Monitoring Program, which collects and tests fish from lakes and rivers across Ontario for contaminants, and turns those results into the Guide to Eating Ontario Fish — an assessment of measured contaminant levels used to determine how many fish meals a person can safely eat per month for the type, size and location where the fish was caught. This consumption advice is generally based on guidelines from Health Canada, and covers an interactive map of more than 2,700 fishing locations across the province.
Instead of a yes/no answer, you get a meals-per-month number for two groups:
- General population — the standard monthly meal limit for adults not in the sensitive group.
- Sensitive population — anyone who is pregnant or may become pregnant, and children under 15 years old, since developing fetuses and young children are affected by contaminants like mercury and PCBs at lower levels than the general population.
For example, an angler who catches a 33 cm (13 inch) Walleye and checks the advisory table might find the guidance is 8 meals a month for the general population, but only 4 for the sensitive population at that specific lake. Catch a bigger walleye, or catch one from a different lake, and that number changes.
Contaminant levels aren't random — they follow predictable patterns.
- Predator fish accumulate more. Walleye and Northern Pike are likely to contain higher levels of mercury than whitefish of the same size, because walleye and pike are top predators that feed on smaller fish which may themselves carry elevated mercury, while whitefish feed lower on the food chain, on aquatic insects and invertebrates that carry less mercury.
- Muskellunge is a special case. Muskie will also likely have elevated mercury levels and should not be consumed by anyone, regardless of location.
- Bigger and older generally means more contaminants. Length is used as the key variable in every advisory table because contaminant burden builds up over a fish's lifetime.
This is also why the Guide's tables are organized by fish length rather than just species — contaminant levels generally increase with fish length, so for a fish smaller than the tested range, anglers are advised to follow the advice given for the smallest tested range.
There's a real historical pattern worth knowing, even though it doesn't replace checking your specific lake.
PCBs remain the dominant issue in the Great Lakes. Fish consumption advisories for Great Lakes fish primarily result from elevated PCB and mercury concentrations, with PCBs driving the majority of advisories in both Canada and the U.S. The legacy of decades of industrial and chemical discharge means Great Lakes advisories tend to be more restrictive for larger, older predator fish than a lot of remote inland lakes.
Things have generally improved, but not resolved. PCB levels in fillets have dropped by 90% for some species in some lakes since the 1970s, though concentrations remain above unrestricted consumption benchmarks, and mercury levels have generally declined by half over the last four decades. Overall conditions are rated Fair across the Great Lakes, except Lake Huron, which rates Good.
Remote Northern Ontario lakes aren't automatically "clean." Mercury in fish is heavily influenced by natural watershed geology and atmospheric deposition, not just local industry — so a pristine-looking, hard-to-reach lake can still carry a restrictive mercury advisory for large walleye or pike, while a lake nearer a city can be less restricted for smaller or bottom-feeding species. This is exactly why species- and size-specific lookup matters more than a general "this lake is fine" assumption.
The long-term trend is a concern researchers are watching. Some scientific modelling suggests mercury levels in Ontario fish could rise further in the coming decades if current environmental trends continue, which is part of why the province re-tests and updates advisories regularly rather than treating them as fixed.
A couple of practical notes: you can eat fish from different locations and categories in the same month, as long as you track everything you've eaten against each location's limits. And for some locations, consumption advice is given for species or sizes that aren't actually legal to keep under Ontario's fishing regulations — so cross-check the Fishing Regulations Summary too, since a fish being "safe to eat" per the contaminant guide doesn't automatically mean you're allowed to keep it.
- Go to the Guide to Eating Ontario Fish interactive map and type in the name of the waterbody where you caught your fish, or browse the map to find it.
- Click the marker for your location and select "Consumption advisory table" from the pop-up.
- Identify the type of fish you caught, then measure its total length from nose to tail.
- Match that length to the correct range in the advisory table to find your monthly meal limit for both the general and sensitive population.
- If you're in the sensitive population and also eat store-bought or commercial fish four or more times a month, factor that in too — the advisory is about your total mercury/PCB exposure, not just what comes out of that one lake.
- Muskellunge — as noted above, the province's standing advice is not to eat it at all, in any location.
- Lake Sturgeon — recreational fishing is restricted in areas where populations are listed as threatened; catch-and-release is still permitted where populations aren't threatened. This is a conservation rule, not a contamination one — but it means keeping and eating sturgeon isn't an option almost anywhere in the province right now.
- American Eel — recreational fishing is prohibited because the species is listed as endangered; any eel caught must be released.
Ontario doesn't hand out a province-wide "safe" or "unsafe" label for lakes, and any article that gives you one is oversimplifying a system that's actually more useful than that. The real answer is always: check the specific lake, the specific species, and the specific size of the fish you caught, using the official interactive map before your next fish fry. It takes about two minutes, and it's the only way to get an answer that's actually accurate for your catch.
